Q1: What is MUSC Virtual Specialty Care?

A: MUSC Virtual Specialty Care is a suite of video-based specialty care services for adult patients (18+) in South Carolina. Appointments are available Monday–Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and can be accessed via smartphone, tablet, or computer from anywhere.

Q3: Are insurance plans accepted for Virtual Specialty Care?

A: Yes, MUSC Virtual Specialty services accept various insurance plans.

Q4: Can providers refer patients to Virtual Specialty Care?

A: Yes, providers can fax referrals to 843-985-9849, and direct referrals are also available through Epic. The Virtual Specialty team will then contact the patient to schedule the appointment and assist with intake and technology needs.

Q5: Do patients need a referral to schedule a virtual specialty appointment?

A: While a referral is preferred, it is not required.

Q6: How can patients schedule a virtual specialty appointment?

A: Patients should visit MUSC.care, select Access Virtual Specialty Care, and answer a few questions. Depending on appointment availability, the patient will be prompted to complete scheduling online or to call 843-792-7097 for support with scheduling the appointment. There is a field in the scheduling platform where a provider referral document can be uploaded; however, a referral is optional.

Q7: What kind of support does MUSC provide to patients before the appointment?

A: MUSC’s Virtual Specialty team contacts patients ahead of their visit to assist with the intake process and troubleshoot any potential technology issues. Our team will facilitate the follow-up care plan and stay in communication with the patient.

Q8: What happens if a patient needs in-person follow-up care?

A: Patients are referred to their closest or preferred healthcare facility for in-person follow-up, including labs and other diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Q9: Where are prescriptions sent after a virtual visit?

A: Prescriptions are sent to the patient’s local pharmacy.

Q10: How soon can patients typically get a virtual specialty appointment?

A: Availability varies by specialty with a goal to see patients within 7 to 14 days from the referral request.
